You do not need dozens of funnels to make post-purchase upsells work. This proven two-layer structure covers every order from day one, and it is the setup we recommend to every merchant.
Layer 1: Four to five targeted bestseller funnels
For your most important products, add dedicated funnels with a trigger (for example "Product X in order") and hand-picked upsell products:
Four to five of these funnels are usually enough. Cover your bestsellers, not your whole catalog.
Pair a bestseller with its natural companion: device plus accessory, product plus refill, shoe plus care kit.
These offers usually convert best, so a slightly stronger discount often pays off here.
Layer 2: One catch-all funnel at the bottom, built as a two-step funnel
Create one funnel without any trigger ("Show for all"). It matches every eligible order that no other funnel claims, so no customer leaves without an offer. Build it with two steps:
First offer: Product in cart, most expensive product. Re-offer the most expensive product the customer just bought, for example "add a second one at 20 % off". This is the strongest first offer for an order you know nothing else about.
Second offer on both branches: AI recommendation. Add one more offer in the Accepted branch and one in the Declined branch, each with AI recommendation as the product source. The AI analyzes the order and suggests the most relevant products automatically, and products the customer already bought are never offered again.
When you add the second offer, you can copy the discount and design from the first one instead of rebuilding them, then just switch the product source. See Copy settings between offers.
💡 Two steps means every order gets a second, relevant chance, no matter what was bought.
Funnel order matters
Place the targeted bestseller funnels above the catch-all funnel in your funnel list. Funnels are evaluated top to bottom and the first match wins, so specific funnels must come first. See What happens when multiple funnels match?.
Then: measure and optimize
After 1 to 2 weeks, check your Analytics for display rate and conversion per funnel.
Use A/B testing to try different discounts, products and texts.
Keep the catch-all funnel running permanently. It is your safety net for every order your targeted funnels do not cover.
