How post-purchase upsells work
Where the offer appears, how the flow runs, why it is risk-free.
A post-purchase upsell is an additional product offer shown right after a customer completes checkout, before the order confirmation (Thank you) page. Because the offer appears after payment is completed, it can never interrupt the checkout or cost you the original sale.
How the flow works
- Your customer completes checkout and pays.
- Post Purchase Upsell Hero shows the first matching upsell offer on the Shopify-hosted post-purchase page.
- The customer accepts or declines with one click. No payment or shipping details need to be re-entered.
- If the offer is accepted, the product is added to the original order, and you can show further follow-up offers ("if accepted").
- If the offer is declined, you can show a downsell offer instead.
- The customer lands on the regular order confirmation page.
Why post-purchase upsells work
- Extra revenue with zero risk. The original order is already paid. An upsell can only add revenue, never lose the sale.
- True one-click purchase. Accepting the offer charges the customer automatically, without re-entering any details.
- Natively integrated. The offer runs on Shopify's own post-purchase page and automatically matches your checkout branding.
- Relevant for every customer. Triggers and AI recommendations control exactly who sees which offer.
Good to know
- The upsell is added to the existing order (no separate order is created). See How an accepted upsell changes the order.

- Shopify allows exactly one app in the post-purchase slot. Selecting Post Purchase Upsell Hero replaces any other post-purchase app in that slot.
