House numbers belong in address line 1, together with the street. That is what carriers and address databases expect. But reality is messier, so here is how AddressHero handles the edge cases.
Some customers put their house number in address line 2, often because of browser autofill. With this setting active, such addresses are considered valid and the order is not flagged or put on hold.
We advise against relying on address line 2 for house numbers, and against adding a separate mandatory house-number field to your checkout:
Also note: whether your checkout shows address line 2 at all is a Shopify checkout setting, not an AddressHero option.
If corrected orders show the house number in the wrong field downstream (for example in the Adresszusatz in your ERP), the cause is usually another tool rewriting the address AFTER our correction. A real case: Shopify Marketplace Connect removed the house number we had corrected and moved it to address line 2. The fix was disabling the address manipulation in that tool.
